What Happens in Vegas... Posted 11:59 PM 10/31/2009

Congratulations to the Royal City Reign U13 Girls Gold who took home first place at the Las vegas Mayor's Cup International Tournament held on October 24th and 25th, 2009.

The Reign travelled with 13 players to the sunny climes of Las vegas to participate in one of the largest "top tier" tournaments in the United States. Teams from Nevada, California, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Oregon as well as from Canada were competing in the 80-90 degree heat to take home the top prize in the Mayor's Cup.

The team experienced the "bigger is better" American philosophy on Friday morning when they travelled to one of the tournament venues for training. Players ran through training on one of 10 side by side synthetic turf fields that the City has purpose built specifically for soccer. By noon with the temperature approaching the high 80's the team broke for lunch and an afternoon of sightseeing and outlet mall shopping.

Saturday morning saw the girls rise early for a team breakfast and discussion of individual and team goals for the tournament before embarking on travel to the fields. At this new venue, the girls were met with 10 impressive grass fields and a carnival like facility with vendors selling all manner of soccer related gear as well as food and beverage.

Seeded in a pool with 3 Nevada teams, the Reign knew that the only way to reach the final would be for a first place finish in order to face the winner of the other pool of 4 teams. The Reign started off with determination and desire scoring early and getting the better of their opposition. The momentum shifted however and their opposition scored 2 quick goals and the Royal City side found themselves down 2-1 in the second half. With some minor adjustments to the formation, the Reign came roaring back playing with confidence and aggressiveness. Playing good football, the girls made use of the width of the field to pass and attack the tiring Nevada side. Scoring 3 goals in the second half the Reign finished off their initial tilt with a 4-2 victory and they were on their way.

Their Saturday afternoon contest was played at 4:00 under a cloudless blue sky in 90 degree heat. Playing against an opposing side that had won their earlier contest, the Reign knew that this would be a must win proposition in order to keep their chances for first place alive. Again, the Reign stuck to their game plan which was to maintain possession, pass using the width of the field and to relentlessly support the ball carrier. Again, the Royal City squad was able to score the first marker and this continued to build their confidence. Their opposition battled back however and knotted the score at 1 apiece. Never panicking and continuing to weather the physical opposition and hard tackling play of this Nevada squad the Reign scored in the second half to take the lead. The final result of the contest was 2-1 and the RC Reign had come out of day 1, with a perfect 2-0 record.

Game 3 on Sunday was an 8:00 contest which had it's merits and it's challenges. On the good side, heat wouldn't be a factor as the air was cool and calm however it meant rising at about 6:00 in order to get breakfast, travel and to warm-up. Facing a team that had yet to win a game, the Reign also knew that the only way to guarantee a position in the championship game would be to win this contest. It was clear early on that this was the least physical, and least aggressive of any of the teams that they had faced to this point. With a little extra time on the ball, the Royal City side was able to move the ball with authority and grace. This game presented the opportunity to move some players around and to try a few new formations and tactics. The end result was a 3-0 victory but were it not for a couple unlucky hits of the post and crossbar, the result could have easily have been more lopsided.

Playing in the Championship final at noon, the Reign had achieved what they set out to do and now had to simply play 60 minutes of solid football to get to the podium. With some gusty wind and high billowy clouds, the temperature although in the mid-80's was not a factor in the outcome of the game. Rested and anxious, the girls were energized and excited to get the game played. For the fourth straight game, the RC side played nicer football then their Nevada opposition. It was clear that the Nevada Elite squad from Reno was going to rely on the kick and run game, while the girls from New Westminster stayed true to their training and passed, moved, shielded and maintained possession in the way they knew they were capable of. This contest however was a much more physical affair with the Reno squad attempting to knock the RC side off the ball at each opportunity. As a result, the Reign were able to capitalize on a long free kick from the left side that dipped over the opposition wall and under the crossbar giving the Reign their first goal and ultimately the Championship. Weathering an increasingly physical Nevada side and stepping up our own physical play, the Reign refused to let the Elite squad time or space to get the ball inside and as a result their shots were ineffective attempts from the outside that really didn't challenge the RC keeper. Final result was RC Reign 1 and Nevada Elite 0.

Overall the Reign finished the tournament as the only undefeated and untied team having scored 10 goals for with only 3 against in 4 games. The trip will definitely be a highlight and a lasting memory for not only the girls but for the parents who attended. The Royal City Reign are: Celeste Bain, Carly Cody, Naomi Noda, Ally Fabian, Jenna Ryan, Tatianna Ferris, Kristin Hackett, Juliet Davies, Nadjema Soro, Anisha Sangha, Jeevin Sekhon, Rachel Shuster, Raquel Tjernagel, Allison Shanks, Zoe Loewen and Tara Stamberg. U12 Girls House "Tigers" Earn District Silver! Posted 11:00 PM 07/03/2010

Royal City Tigers, one of the club's three excellent U12 girls house teams, earned a Silver medal in North District Cup play. The Tigers came out on the wrong side of a 4-2 game against North Coquitlam Nitro (a team the played Select last season) but held the edge in play for much of the match. After going 3-0 in the preliminary rounds and outscoring their opponents 21-3, the Tigers advanced straight to the semis where they knocked out a solid Golden Ears squad and earned a berth in the finals. The Nitro barely made it past the Royal City Breakers on a 2-1 win in the sixth round of penalties to earn the other spot in the finals.

The Tigers played 21 games this year in regular season as well as in tournaments and went 16-4-1, scoring 82 times while allowing 23. Along the way, the team picked up their second consecutive Thanksgiving Smash Tournament Gold medal. Way to go, Tigers!

Silver Medals For U12 Girls (Gold) Royal City Reign Posted December 2008

Playing at the U12 Gold level and so far undefeated in league play, the Reign entered the Richmond Girls Tournament with high expectations and determined focus to take home the top prize.

Leading off against a side from Douglas Park in Vancouver, the Reign had little difficulty in grinding out a 4-0 victory. They followed up this win with an equally gritty performance against a Surrey Breakers team ending the day with a 3-0 victory and sole possession of first place in in their age group made up of 10 teams. Stephanie Von Riedemann backstopped the Reign, playing flawless soccer in earning back to back shutouts in the first two games. Knowing that they needed to win by a margin of 4 goals to guarantee a place in the championship final, they faced the top Richmond team on Sunday morning and blasted out a 6-1 victory. This set up a championship final against familiar opponents, Cliff Avenue United - who the Reign had faced twice before in Gold medal games, splitting wins one apiece. The final game was an intense contest with two skillful and hard working teams battling it out for supremacy. Cliff avenue attacked relentlessly and were able to rebuff any of the Reign advances. Scoreless at half time, it looked like the game might go to penalty kicks until the United squad capitalized on an overworked Reign defence and slotted home a well placed shot. The Reign battled back dominating for the final 5 minutes but were unable to find the back of the Cliff Avenue goal.

Overall, the Royal City side left the tournament with a silver medal having scored 13 goals for versus 2 against and a record of 3 wins and 1 loss. Playing outstanding soccer for the Reign were Carly Cody who netted 5 goals and Tatianna Ferris who contributed both on the offensive side as well as with critical defensive plays throughout the tournament. Another stand-out player, Zoe Loewen played consistent mistake free soccer over 4 games and was a big reason the Reign only allowed 2 goals over the 4 game tournament.

U15 Boys Win District Gold Posted March 2009

It has been quite a season for the RCYSC New Westminster Royals U15 Boys soccer team.

After starting the season with 2 wins, 7 losses and a tie in their first 10 games, the "Royals" finished strong, posting 1 loss and 5 wins during cup play over the second half of their season. The Royals rode this 5 game winning streak into the Cup Finals, leaving them tied in points for first place, but way ahead in number of goals scored.

The Cup Final game against Golden Ears United Kaos was played in South Aldergrove Park on Saturday, March 7th, under sunny skies, with the mercury hovering just above freezing. The game was further complicated by strong winds, gusting at times up to 40 kph. A tremendous number of family members braved the cold weather and distance to the game, to support the Royals.

The first goal of the game, scored by Royals forward Ivan Biriukov, came in the first minute of play. The Kaos answered quickly, scoring their only goal on stalwart Royals goalie, Peter Stankiewicz, in the fourth minute of play. The two teams battled through the rest of the game, with each team showcasing strong defensive play, and brilliant goalkeeping.

The Royals finally put the winning goal past the Kaos goalie, when Rafael Rosas found the back of the net with just 4 minutes left in regulation time.

This final win of their season netted the Royals a well-deserved gold medal in the District 5 Championships.

Coaches: Genio Daniele and Theresa Roper, Players: Derek Watt,Ivan Biriukov, Kenneth Perez, Minho Shin, Russ Hamilton, Devon Graham, Schuyler Salm, Andres Puentes, Quinn Daniele, Alex Skiba, Rafael Rosas, Peter Stankiewicz, Daniel Lamont and Jorge Colin

U16 Girls Gold "Rush" Take Silver Posted December 2008

The U16 Gold Royal City Rush went undefeated over the weekend playing 3 games to get to the championship finals against a determined hometown Richmond team.

Starting off against a previously undefeated Surrey United team, the Rush came out strong and battled to a hard fought 2-1 victory. The girls followed up with a 2-0 success over the Semiahmoo Wave. Needing at least a tie to get into the gold medal game, Sunday saw the Rush line up against the tournament's host the Richmond Rebels, another team undefeated during the season so far. The see-saw battle saw the two sides exchange single goals. The resulting draw ensured a rematch versus the Rebels in the gold medal game.

With both sides playing determined yet cautious soccer, after 90 minutes the score was 0-0, setting up a nail biting penalty kick shootout. Unfortunately for the Rush, the Rebels were able to capitalize on more of the PKs.

Settling for the silver medal, the Rush held their head high after having played 4 games undefeated and narrowly losing in penalty kicks.

Strong performances for the Rush were contributed by Kamila Rogic-McLean on defence, Sylvie Barton tending goal and Monika Podgorski, Ashley Gilmore and Elena Samuel who provided the firepower scoring all the Royal City goals.
