Possible Loss of Mercer Stadium

New Westminster may face the loss of Mercer Stadium to accomodate the building of a new high school. Parents, players, friends of soccer: While there is an overwhelming need for a new high school to serve the youth of New Westminster, it is more than disturbing to hear that the possible site for said institution is our only turf field at Mercer Stadium. If you agree that Mercer is too important to be demolished, you are encouraged to contact all members of City council to express your opinion.

Please see the most recent posts on our Turf In 2010 page.

For more on the debacle that is the quest for a new high school in New Westminster, check out this article from the Vancouver Sun.

BC Soccer Health Advisory...

Please be advised that the BC Soccer Association has issued a health advisory, which we expect all of the Club's coaches and teams to immediately comply with.

Simply, "teams are being asked to consider alternate ways to shaking their opponents hands at the end of the match...".

Consequently, please refrain from the traditional hand-shake and use common sense to come up with a sportsmanlike but non-contact alternative. Coaches should discuss this with their opposition prior to the beginning of any game or scrimmage.

  • Recommendation is for players to nod at each other, the coaches and referees.

We also encourage teams to have a supply of sanitized hand wipes on hand, and team treats (eg. oranges, etc) are individually segregated and distributed in a protected manner.

George Hutchison has offered a suggestion, based on his old rugby days, on how you might want to honour your opponents:
"One team forms two lines of players facing each other with a gap of about 10' between the two lines. The opposing team simply files between the two lines to a round of applause from the other team. Then we simply reverse the roles and repeat the process."

    Remembering Anne Monk

[+] Click here to see Anne's photo

Please join us on July 7, 2009, 7:00 pm at Anne Monk Field (also known as the Canada Games Pool Field), to remember the 10th anniversary of Anne Monk's passing. (7:00 pm - U12 Girls Challengers Scrimmage, 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm - In Memoriam)

There is a very unique period in the history of the Royal City Youth Soccer Club. In the mid to late 1990s, RCYSC was struggling with a membership of around 300 players and had a low profile in New Westminster's rich sports scene. The club executive, while trying hard, was not well organized and there was disarray in the coaching ranks as well.

Enter Anne Monk: Teacher/librarian by day and motivated soccer mom every other moment. Prior to succumbing to cancer, what Anne did for the club in such a short period of time was so inspiring, Gary Mason wrote a touching tribute that appeared in the Vancouver Sun on July 24, 1999. Please take a momemt to Read the Article.

Whitecaps FC Women Play League Game in New Westminster

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC Women hosted the Colorado Force on Sunday June 28, at New Westminster's Mercer Stadium in front of over 1,100 fans. The teams, playing under a blazing sun, tied at one goal apiece. The Caps drew first blood on a Jodi-Ann Robinson strike from the penalty mark in the 50th minute, but the Force managed to tie it in the 70th.

Click Here to see the post game interview with Whitecaps coach Alan Koch.

Royal City Youth Soccer Club was well represented by it's younger players who took part in a pre-game clinic, escorted the Caps and Force onto the pitch, and played Futsal at the half. The morning Futsal tournament was lauded by players and parents alike as being some of the most fun they've had all season. Girls and Boys, between 9 and 12 years old, took part in a 6 game round-robin event to decide who would play at the half. The teams were named after prominent Whitecaps players: Jodi-Ann Robinson, Monica Lam-Feist, Randee Hermus, and Sian Bagshawe for the girl's side. Jay Nolly, Martin Nash, Takashi Hirano, and Lyle Martin on the boy's side.

For more information on the Whitecaps visit whitecapsfc.com.

Of Note: The centre Referee for the game was Marco Arruda. Marco started his career in New Westminster!
